Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid, Spanish capital to protest against the law recently passed by Parliament that allows the execution of abortion for girls from 16 years until the 14th week of gestation.
The demonstrations called March for Life rallies in 2010 include 70 Spanish cities, as well as actions around the world in cities such as Buenos Aires, Lima, Monterrey, Guatemala City, La Paz, Paris and Brussels.
The demonstrators in Madrid, included men, women, young and old. Many families with small children showed up dressed to ride.
Families call for the withdrawal of the Law of Sexual Health and Reproductive Health and the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy, which enters into force in July.
Besides keeping the time limit for abortion, the law still allows pregnancy to be interrupted until the 22nd week if there is serious risk to life or health of pregnant or serious abnormalities in the fetus.
The scoringHas been called by some 270 organizations, including Right to Vivir, and Doctors HazteOir.org por la Vida.
Social Reform
This law is one of the latest social reform measures adopted in Spain, like gay marriage, which has caused unease among conservative groups and the Catholic Church.
Critics of the new law say the government is promoting abortions instead of supporting motherhood.
But the new law is only regulating what is currently happening in the country, since abortion is allowed when the mother stating that his mental health is at risk if the pregnancy takes on.
In 2008, were performed over 115,000 abortions in the country, mostly based on this premise and during the first 12 weeks of gestation.
The new law also provides for improvements in sex education in schools and greater access to contraceptive methods.
